Shakespeare stole the whole story from a danish myth about Amled. Amled had to pretend as a fool (innocent) to survive and later to kill his fathers brother, who had killed the father of Amled because he wished to marry Amleds mother. In our mythology we have more stories like that (playing weak - so your strenght come as a surprise). BTW Amled/Hamlet is burried about 30 km from where i live.
And yes we still have witches in Denmark. I'm married to one - she says so herself. Other countries have them too (a lot in fact).
Here in Denmark we try to burn them every year (on the 23th of june) - with the result they fly to Bloksbjerg in Germany (Brocken in Harzen). It's one of the greatest events in Denmark. Even if we alreday the day after become very disappointed when we see, that they are still here.(the last "really" witch in Denmark was really burned in 1693 - after that we realized, that we can't burn half the population). Remember womens liberation has almost completely succeded here. We are now talking about mens liberation - maybe we some day will act too.
